Out of nowhere, the Underground Opens

Managed by Jim Coffman and his hurdy gurdy right-hand-man Michael Whittaker, the Underground featured a unique blend of local, national, and international bands bringing independent punk and post-punk music to the Boston scene. It had a short life but still managed to showcase emerging local bands like Mission of Burma, which considered the Underground “home”, along with fellow locals The Neats, Lyres, Peter Dayton, and Bound and Gagged. It also brought firsts to Boston with The Cure, Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark, New Order, Bush Tetras, Lydia Lunch, Bauhaus, Brian Brain and the Au Pairs all appearing in a small window of less than two years. You would be hard pressed to find another club that showcased that much talent in that short a period of time.
