Broad St. Block Party “Arrest Dr. Kruell!!!”_The Honorable Kevin White

Broad St. was an epicenter of night time action pouring in and out of places such as Cantone’s, Mavericks, and around the corner at the Space. Broad St. had one daytime event in the Spring of 1981 that brought the Punks, tourists, and the Boston Police Department together, the Broad St. Block Party.

Loosely organized by Dr. Kruell, who took out a permit at Boston City Hall for an Arts and Crafts fair. The block party was held in the open parking lot across the street from Cantone’s and featured: The King Bees were made up of the Hoodoo Skewer, James Ryan on vocals, The Neats,Terry Hanley on drums and Eric Martin on guitar, keyboards and harp, along with the Del Feugos, Tom Lloyd and Dan Zanes playing guitar.

Much to the delight of Teddy Cantone who made a killing at the bar. The party roared on as a warm up to Cantone’s Saturday night bill. Everyone had a great time until the tourists complained of excessive bum showing and illegal sales of alcohol. At 4:00 PM Boston’s finest cleared the street, tore down the sawhorse blockades, and orchestrated a city wide manhunt for Felix Kruell. The Doctor was never found.
