Broad St. Block Party

Broad St. was the epicenter of night time action pouring in and out of Cantone’s, Mavericks, and around the corner at the Space. Broad St. had one daytime event in Spring 1981 that brought the punks, tourists, and the Boston Police Department together — the Broad St. Block Party.

Loosely organized by Dr. Felix Kruell, who took out a permit at City Hall for an Arts and Crafts fair, the block party was held in the open parking lot across the street from Cantone’s and featured The King Bees, made up of the Hoodoo Skewer James Ryan on vocals, the Neats’ Terry Hanley and Eric Martin on drums, keyboards and harp, and The Del Feugos’ Tom Lloyd and Dan Zanes on guitars.

Much to the delight of Teddy Cantone, who made a killing at the bar, the party roared on as a warm up to Cantone’s Saturday night bill. Everyone had a great time until the tourists complained of excessive bum showing and illegal sales of alcohol. At 4 p.m., Boston’s finest cleared the street, tore down the sawhorse blockades, and orchestrated a city wide man hunt for Felix Kruell. The good doctor was never found.
